MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) — The leader of Meta’s AI research department has announced her departure, vacating a key role amid fierce competition in AI technology development.
Joelle Pineau, Meta’s VP for AI research, revealed on Tuesday that she will exit at the end of May after dedicating eight years to the company.
“In today's rapidly changing world, as the pursuit of AI intensifies and Meta gears up for its new phase, it’s the right moment to make room for others to advance the work,” she posted on social media.
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, did not provide immediate comment in response to the news. Pineau also didn't name her successor.
Based in Montreal and a computer science professor at McGill University, Pineau has championed Meta’s “open-source” strategy in AI development, involving the release of core elements of their systems, like the prominent Llama language model, for public use and modification.
Her decision to leave coincides with the company's forthcoming launch of a new AI event, LlamaCon, scheduled for April 29.
In 2023, Pineau took over leadership of Meta’s AI research division, previously known as Facebook AI Research, established over a decade ago by, among others, eminent AI researcher Yann LeCun. LeCun resigned from directing the group in 2018 but continues to serve as Meta’s chief AI scientist.
